NFL Inferno: Five QB’s Who Could Have a Break-Out Season.

We already know who the top QB’s in the NFL are.  Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Eli Manning.  But there are a crop of young QB’s looking to stamp their name amongst the best in the game.  And here are five QB’s who have a shot to do that this season.

5.  Jake Locker  –  Locker looked very good as a rookie last season for the Tennessee Titans.  He filled in admirably while Matt Hasselbeck was out injured.  And his performance last season has given him the chance to compete for the starting job this season.  And if it’s close between Locker and Hasselbeck, then I expect Locker to be named the starter.  The Titans drafted WR Kendall Wright of out Baylor and if Kenny Britt can stay healthy, Locker will have plenty of talent to work with.

4.  Robert Griffin III – Yes Griffin III is a rookie, but he has the sort of swagger about him that exudes confidence, which makes those around him more confident.  This leadership intangible may be the thing that gets Griffin III by until he fully masters the Washington Redskins playbook.  Also, the Redskins upgraded their talent level at WR with the acquisition of Pierre Garcon.  They still have Santana Moss and Fred Davis is emerging at TE.  Plus Griffin III can run the football as well, and this adds an additional element to how he can attack defenses.

It used to be that teams would sit rookie QB’s in their first year to learn behind a veteran.  But now as we’ve seen with Robert Griffin III, rookie QB’s are being named the starter virtually right after they are drafted.

Last season Cam Newton and Andy Dalton, both had outstanding rookie seasons.  But as we’ve seen with past rookie starters like Matt Ryan and Sam Bradford, the sophomore slump can set it after a stellar season as a rookie.  Will the same happen to Newton and Dalton?  If it does here are some possible reason why.

5.  Injuries – Now that the rest of the NFL has taken notice to your great rookie season, the intensity level is raised against you by defenses.  You get hit harder and blitzed more frequently which opens you up to more injuries.  In order to live up to the hype of your rookie, the need arises to make something happen when it’s not there, which exposes you to more injuries as well.

4.  Success goes to your head – When people are telling you how great you are all the time, the average person will start to believe it.  When everyone is singing your praises, there’s no need to think that you aren’t as good as everyone says you are.  So maybe this causes the QB subconsciously to not work as hard in that second year.
